Rustic DIY summer wedding at Upwaltham Barn

Vicky + Robbie's amazing rustic wedding was so beautiful and fun, seriously just wait until you see it! This was definitely one of my favourite weddings of 2017!

Vicky and Robbie got married in June at the gorgeous Upwaltham Barns, which is a shabby chic barn in Chichester- West Sussex. They had their ceremony in the main hall, which was the perfect setting. They chose Upwaltham Barns because... "It is beautiful at all times of the year, in every type of weather. Tim and Nicola, the owners, were so warm and welcoming, every time we visited they acted like we were friends and that they remembered everything about us and our wedding- which is a real talent. Tim and Nicola actually got married at Upwaltham when it was a barn, and they turned it into a venue. They layout of the venue worked so well for us, two barns, a bar and a lovely place to stay on site. They also had grazing sheep in the fields behind the barns as it's the middle of the South Downs."

It was a Rustic/DIY wedding, which was just incredible! I love shooting DIY weddings because they’re always so personal. The detail that Robbie and Vicky went to, to create their own personal touch to the day was fantastic. They really put so much hard work in it really shone through.

Vicky and Robbie’s wedding was everything I love about weddings and had such a fun atmosphere. Here’s their beautifully rustic wedding;

The excitement before the wedding

Vicky got ready at her parents home, before heading to Upwaltham to get into her dress. The atmosphere was absolutely electric. Everyone was so excited, even the cat!

Getting hitched

The wedding itself was a legal ceremony in a beautiful room in Upwaltham Barns, which had personal touches like the paper cranes hanging from the lights. It was an emotional start as Vicky walked down the aisle towards Robbie. During the ceremony they had several beautiful readings from friends and family. It was such a personal service.

After the ceremony

The reception was out in the courtyard of the barns. They were joined by a wonderful jazz band; Tiger Tim's Ragamuffins who entertained all of the guests. Another detail which was awesome company for all of their guest was the "pimp your drink" station which was an old school desk that the couple had up-cycled (this is in ode to Robbie who is a school teacher, along with a lot of the guest which were attending). The venue was decorated with the 1000 homemade paper cranes and the amazing vintage 1970's Peggy the caravan,  which Vicky + Robbie renovated themselves for the big day! They used it as a photo booth for the day which was just awesome. I would honestly love to go on a camping trip in this caravan, its so pretty!

The couple

Vicky wore a gorgeous lace dress. In the daytime she wore a skirt on top along with a gorgeous belt, she whipped this off in the evening for the dancing half of the day. Her Vivienne Westwood shoes were adorable. and very comfy, which is handy!! Robbie wore a Ted Baker jacket (which had an awesome pattern on the jacket lining!) they looked so dapper. Robbie’s buttonhole was awesome, as added within was a bird feather that Robbie had found himself

Vicky and Robbie met when they were at school (they were each others very first kisses. Which is so amazing) they became friends and then years later after university they reunited. Vicky said that she knew when she was 13 that Robbie was "the one," it just took them 15 years to confirm it! They got in touch with me through e-mail and their enquiry really intrigued me. They told me all about their plans for the day and about the caravan that they were renovating, which obviously sounded awesome!! I went down to Sussex to meet Robbie and Vicky in the Autumn before their wedding for a pre-wedding photoshoot, we clicked straight away and I could clearly see how they were made for one another. This made me even more excited than I already was to capture their day! (Also we had a massive bonding session over Harry Potter while eating a bloody lovely pub meal- my favourite things!)

The couple says that if you’re planning your wedding, the biggest piece of advice they could give you is; Robbie: Marry someone that is organised and loves spreadsheets!

Vicky: Marry someone that doesn't mind how much you love spreadsheets!

"Give yourself plenty of time and enjoy it, keep the traditions that you both like and change or get rid of the rest. We've also enjoyed keeping a few secrets along the way, we can't wait to surprise a few people with added extras and personal touches that we hope they will love, even our families don't know some of the aspects of the wedding... well until they help set them up on the day! Find suppliers that you actually like, you'll communicate with them a lot, so you want to make sure you get on with them."
